Part of a new line of soup spoons. I'm trying different colors for the backgrounds, the leaves, the wire, etc. Having lots of fun with the wire and haven't had any serious injuries yet.

Not much to report for the new year. Preparing to apply to shows. Have been invited into one show, Dunwoody Arts Festival, excited about that (even though it is 4 long months away). Was debating applying to the Columbus Arts Fest, but I am thinking no after seeing the previous jewelry vendors. They seem to be primarily high end metalsmiths. My price point is very low compared to previous vendors. Seems like my chances of getting in would be kind of slim and so I need to find a different show that I would be a better fit for/have a better chance of getting into with my $35 application fee! Will probably apply to the Decatur Arts Festival again - it is a local show so that's a plus and it looks fun. Maybe this will be the year of Gorilla Dust.

They don't sell Count Chocula cereal at the grocery store anymore. That has nothing to do with anything, but I think it's worth noting. No Frankenberry either! I tried Cocoa Krispies instead, but deep down I knew it was just not the same.

Festival on Ponce 2011 - Shopper's Review

This was the first year for the show and was organized by AFFPS. They do several Atlanta shows including Buckhead Arts and Crafts Show (which I participated in 2010). I had applied for this show, but was rejected. Actually turned out to be a good thing because I am realizing outdoor shows in July in Atlanta (or really anywhere) are not going to draw a good crowd. It was 98+ degrees both days and humid. Being outside for more than 30 seconds was exhausting so the thought of being inside a tent for two full days is less than appealing. I had a show earlier this month in SC outdoors and it was miserable. Sales at that show were probably the lowest of any show I have ever done too.

I visited the show on Saturday afternoon around 3:00 p.m. That was probably the hottest part of the day, I should probably plan these things out better. Anyhow there were not a lot of people shopping, the flow of traffic was very minimal. According to vendors, this was the norm for the day thus far.

The booths were very, very close together with a narrow paved walkway separating them. It was impossible to walk through with an umbrella (for shade) without hitting a tent on one side or a person on the another. The tents were set up in a long walkway on either side of the paved path. Basically one of those shows where you have to walk all the way to one end and then come all the way back to the other. Had it been a busy show, it would have bottlenecked very quickly - no more than one person each direction could fit through. Unfortunately with these long and straight show set ups, people usually only walk halfway before turning around. Circular or semi-circle patterns seem to encourage the shopper to follow all the way through. Sorry to say I was one of those people who only went halfway. It's not that I wasn't enjoying looking at the wares - it was just too freakin' hot!!!

Too bad - I hoped that if they had to swelter all day at least they would have made some sales.

Parking was street parking and difficult to come by. There was no centralized parking lot. Traffic on Ponce de Leon was very heavy (but those cars did not seem to be going to the show). I normally don't mind parking far away and walking several blocks, but like I said, being outside made me feel like I was going to burst into flames so closer would have been better.

So again this is just my review as a shopper through the show. I can't say too much more than that really. I was there about 45 minutes total. I meant to take some pictures, but left the camera in the car. Oops.

Flower Power

I sold this soup spoon pendant over the weekend at a show in SC. I love these metallic flowers, but unfortunately have not been able to find a large supply of them. I am giving it a go at creating my own flowers for new spoon pendants, will see how that goes. The center of the flower was a rhinestone, but the second the resin touches it, it flattens. I mean the exact second one drop of resin touches the rhinestone it melts (or dissolves? - whatever, it turns into a liquidy pool of color). Weird. I have tried coating the rhinestone in multiple coats of clear nail polish before pouring the resin, but makes no difference. Oh well the effect is kind of unique. I also tried wire wrapping on the handle of the spoon and am very pleased with how it came out.

Have not shared a picture of Prada the Wonderdog for a while so here she is. I like how all her feet are up under her chin. She is sporting her summer in Atlanta shaved chihuahua look. I think she wears it well.

Garden Winds Canopy - White Replacement Top for First Up

Thought I would create this post for anyone with the Wal-Mart First Up brand canopy tent. Currently they are selling these in the store and online for $97. They are very sturdy, easy to put up (you can do it alone, but easier with someone), and most importantly have wind vents in the top. The wind vents are incredibly important as most tents do not have these - although why I don't know. In heavy rains, you may have a few drops leak in around the vents (middle of the tent), but it's not much. Throw a small tarp or plastic on the center of your display if needed during a storm. The drips will only come with heavy, sustained rain.

Anyhow, Wal-Mart no longer carries the white top for this tent. Unfortunately many art shows require white topped tents only. Perhaps they think that makes them look more arty? I can see maybe not wanting the name branded tents (think college names or beer names emblazoned on the top), but solid colors don't seem like a bad thing. I mean does it really matter what color your canopy is if you have a great product and well layed out booth? Anyhow I prefer the eclectic craft shows with multi-colored canopies. Besides I don't get in to too many of the white-topped shows (I think my product is too crafty and not arty enough), but every now and then I will find myself at a white canopy only show. So I searched everywhere for a white top online for the First Up frame and could find nothing. Finally I called the manufacturer and they informed they had discontinued the white tops, but referred me to a company that might still carry them. Garden Winds is the name of the company and the website is here. The replacement white canopy at $79 is almost as much as the frame/canopy itself. The good news is that Garden Winds ships very quickly and allows returns for up to 60 days. The bad news is that this tent does not fit the First Up frame tightly. It's pretty loose at the top (the frame is not tall enough). Also while there are velcro strips to secure the tent to the bars, there is not velcro in the corners to secure the canopy to the corner frame. I guess you could sew in some velcro if you are up for that kind of excitement.

Overall I would not recommend the Garden Winds replacement canopy for the First Up Frame. The replacement canopy itself is good quality, but is just not a good fit to the frame. Unless you are willing to make quite a few adjustments (we're talking some sewing and adding velcro and who knows what else), it's just not going to look that great. Just my thoughts. Apologies if you came here looking for a white First Up replacement canopy - but if you ever find one or have one you want to sell, leave me a comment!

Chatty Crafty - Summer Version

The summer show was held in a park on the river. Great location. Here is my tent - this is all the merchandise I could create in two weeks after selling everything in Pittsburgh. Luckily this was a much smaller scale show so I was fine.

Then around 4:00 another storm was headed through. The organizers came around and told us to close up, they were shutting down the show early at 4:30 for the storm. Well I can only pack up so fast by myself and that storm hit about 5 minutes after the warning. It was insane like a giant wall of water just descended upon us. I have never been so wet in my life. Seriously, I had to stop at a Wal-Mart on the way home to by dry clothes (and underpants!). Luckily was able to throw my jewelry in a box and under a tarp, but everything else was soaked. The two hour drive home with wet cardboard boxes, tarps, tent walls and tablecloths was fun. My car smells like monkey butt now, but everything has dried out nicely. Unfortunately a few tents got trashed (you can see the remains of one by the trash can). Everything was completely soaked. It was kind of refreshing once I just gave up and enjoyed the shower. Oh well, I was probably too dry earlier anyhow. It would have been nice to have a little help packing up once the rains stopped, but the volunteers were nowhere to be seen. No worries, eventually got loaded up and headed home.

Three Rivers Arts Festival

Ok, enough rejection, here is a show that I actually got into. The Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh, PA. It was amazing! I did the three-day session in the park. It was busy all three days, most times there was a line outside of my tent. I originally wanted to do the five-day session in the plaza, but since I sold out of everything by the end of day three, it's probably best I did not! The weather was hot, but luckily no rain. There were bands playing in the park during the show, but I never felt the sound was overwhelming. I made enough money be happy for quite a while - more than I have every made at any three day show. My brother lives in a condo adjacent to the park which was awesome because it meant port-a-potties could be avoided. Oh how I hate port-a-potties. Luckily I brought a friend to assist at the show as I would have been overwhelmed in the first hour. I promised her 10% of the profits - never suspecting I would sell everything I owned. Needless to say, my assistant was incrediby well-compensated for her three days of work. My brother and his wife even got put to work for a few hours. Definitely the most successful show I have ever had!

The tan short tent is mine. Well nowhere on the website or show materials did it say a white tent, it said a tent with wind vents. My tan tent had wind vents. However I was the only non-white tent in a sea of white. I looked like a freckle. Oh well, I was easy to find - just look for the brown tent:

Indie Craft Parade

Ok, gave the Indie Craft Parade another shot. It just seems like such a fun show. This is the third year I applied and I thought yes, this will be the year they want a little Gorilla Dust in their show. Then I got this in my inbox:

We like your concept, but it's not the level of quality we were looking for. Keep refining your craft and try again next year!

Ouch and ouch. I think I like it better when the rejection comes without an explanation! I also think I'm going to take it as a sign that this is just not the show for me so 2011 was the last year of applying for Gorilla Dust Designs. Sometimes you just have to realize a show is not for you. I guess I will have to take comfort from the piles of money I made in Pittsburgh earlier this month and the other piles I made this weekend in Chattanooga . . . I think I feel better already!

First Up Stays Up!

I had a show last week in Columbia, SC - Crafty Feast. Unfortunately the weather was scheduled to be horrible (only the day of the show, every day before and after for a week was perfect weather). I decided to give it a go anyhow with my new tent. There was one huge downpour that lasted about ten minutes and I had to hurry and put up the tent walls as the rain was blowing sideways. After a few minutes, there were a few drops of rain in the center of the tent where the wind vents are- but this was only after a few minutes and massive amounts of rain. The rest of the day was sunny, but WINDY. I tried to tell myself it was refreshing, but after the third time my necklace stand blew over and hit me in the arm . . . well less refreshing.

So there you have it, the First Up brand tent survived a storm and lots of wind damage when a lot of other tents did not. It's on sale right now at Wal-Mart for $97, so give it a shot if you need a canopy. It only comes with a tan top, but you can buy white online if you are in a show that requires white tents. Whatever kind of tent you buy, make sure it has the wind vents in the top.

The show was great despite the weather. Duh, Crafty Feast is always fun! Even in hurricane force winds. The free beer coupon was much appreciated and immediately utilized after surviving the mid-afternoon downpour.

I had applied to the Indie Crafstravaganza last year and didn’t get in which, let's face it, happens now and then. Nothing to get depressed about. Through a very complex formula (also known as guessing), I have determined I have around a 63% acceptance rate. That's right, 63%. Impressive, right? Anyhow, it seems all 37% of the rejections come at once though which can be a little crushing when you get the third one in three days in your inbox. But hey, rejections happen and life goes on. Taco Bell helps take away the sting. Stay away from their new shrimp offerings though. I love you Taco Bell, but shrimp, what the heck are you thinking????

Because of the past year’s rejection to the show, I almost didn’t apply this year. The deadline was April 1st and I kept going back and forth trying to decide, but then I thought hey, why not? I mean really, why not?? I took some new pictures and was ready to go. April 1st came and I took a nap . . . and didn’t wake up until April 2nd. Don’t judge, April 1st was an exhausting day. So I missed the deadline, doh! However, lucky for me they had extended the deadline until April 5th so I figured that must be a sign. I applied and you guessed it, got in. Yay and yay! I am super excited for this show, I just think it is going to be a fun time. It's one of those that even if I had not gotten in I would have gone to shop again. I went last December and there were some amazing artists there. Even if you aren't accepted into a show, shopping a show is a great way to see what types of artists/crafters they were looking for. Not only that, it's a great way to shop - I found some really neat xmas presents last year.

So there you have it. If you get rejected, try again and then try again after that – take new pictures, design new stuff and give it a go. Oh yeah, be nice! Just because you were rejected does not mean the show organizer hates your guts and hates your stuff. Really it doesn't. Aside from a jury fee, there isn't too much to lose in applying. Although if you get rejected three times in a row, maybe you should give up on that particular venue. At a certain point you have to know when to fold them. Know when to walk away and know when to run. Kenny Rogers, words to live by. Oh man, now I want to do a karaoke duet to Islands in the Stream. . . my point was that there is a show out there for you, just keep looking until you find it. When you do find it, head into it like a shark driving an assault vehicle through a herd of seals wearing chum pants!

Woodstock Market - Review

Location: Old Wal-Mart parking lot in Woodstock

Dates: I attended April 1-3 show, but the market is held the first weekend of every month March thru December

Hours: Friday 9-5, Saturday 9-5, Sunday 11-6

Entry fee: $70 for single booth, 10x10 space, all three days

This was my first time attending the Woodstock Market. The weather Friday was gray and chilly and there were no customers. None. I have never had a show where I did not make a single sale . . . . until Friday, April 1st! Saturday was better, there was a car show going on in the adjoining parking lot that I think brought in some more customers. Sunday I didn't return, but let me circle back around to that later. There were about 70 vendors at this show including food vendors (funnel cakes, pork rinds, that kind of fair food). There was a good mix of vendors, it was not jewelry-heavy as so many shows tend to be. Lots of variety - soap, candles, canned goods (jelly, salsa, etc.) wood-working, photography, glass work. I only spotted 3 or 4 commercial booths, one selling a type of jewelry cleaner, another selling a type of home cosmetic party item. There were quite a few first time vendors and a handful of vendors that have done this show for years.

Things I liked about this show:

Cost - $70 for 3 days cannot be beat

Location - Easy to find (as long as you do not follow your GPS, but pay attention to the building numbers once you turn onto Main Street)

Vendors - Good variety and everyone was so friendly

Things I didn't like:

Location - Yes, I said that above because it is easy to find, however it is located in the parking lot of an old Wal-Mart building. People have to drive to this location, it is not in an area where people are going to stumble upon during a stroll nor is it within a vibrant shopping area with a built-in customer base.

Number of days - Why on Friday? According to most of the repeat vendors that I spoke with, Friday is always incredibly slow in terms of sales. It seems like a weekend show would make more sense. It's also hard for me to take a day off from work on a Friday.

Ah and the weather - outdoor shows are nothing if not challenging when it is windy. And Saturday? WINDY. If you have ever been under a canopy tent in high winds then you know they basically act like sails on a sailboat. If I had been sailing Saturday, I would have had the most awesome sailboat day ever! Sadly, I was not sailing, I was trying desperately to keep my tent grounded. . . and my tent did not live to make it through the end of the day Saturday. It was weighted down very well with the professional concreted filled pvc pipe, chained and bungeed, but the top frame gave up the ghost during a big gust. I was not the only one to lose a tent Saturday either, sad, sad day for tents. Unfortunately, my jewelry does not do well in hot midday sun so I had to forfeit Sunday as my tent was a crumpled mess.

Little bit of a tangent on tents if you happen to be thinking of investing. I had the Swiss Gear tent. Not great in wind at all, very flimsy canopy support and legs. It cost $99 and lasted me two years, but that was primarily due to having lucked out with great weather at shows. A couple of the tents that were mangled Saturday were EZ Up brands. Up until Saturday, this was the brand I had planned to invest in, but they really did not fair much better than my tent. The only tents that did well during the winds were the First Up tents. I watched and even during the highest gusts those tents would barely move while the EZ Ups were shaking all over the place! The merchandise inside the tents is an entirely different story, because wow, so many vendors had things broken or mangled Saturday. Why did the First Up tents do so well? The vents in the top. Genius! So I am investing in a First Up and will report back at the end of the month after testing it at two more outdoor shows. Wind vents, I think they are the answer! (fingers crossed)

Oh yeah, another thing, plastic milk jugs tied to your tent are not ok to use as weights. One gust of wind and your tent is toast!!! Probably your neighbor's tent too.

Ok, so Woodstock Market. Very cute little show, friendly vendors, but alas, not many customers. Apparently they are doing more advertising this year than in past years so perhaps the customer base will build as the season continues. I hope so, I think it could be a really great market with the community's support. I am not planning on signing up for this show again in the next few months because I have other shows that coincide with the same dates. I do plan to go back in the fall and shop around though.

So if you are thinking of doing this show, my advice is to go visit next month, look around, buy a few things, maybe eat a funnel cake, get a feel for the market and decide if you want to be a vendor. Just don't forget the weights if you become a vendor. Seriously, don't forget.

Dominos

I have had these dominos for such a long time and never really invested too much time in them. I always seem to spend way more effort on spoons and scrabble tiles, but this weekend I finally gave the dominos the attention they deserved. I designed the pictures of the cat and the flapper girl using MS Paint. Yes, you did read that correctly, MS Paint. True, it has extremely limited capabilities as a picture editing program, but for making simple drawings, it's pretty nifty. The dandelions are from a rubber stamp. All this time I have been buying rub-on dandelions, but now realize a stamp works just as well. Better in fact because 1) the dandelion print I like has been discontinued and 2) I can use the stamp a bazillion times.

Now I just need more dominos!

I found these flowers at Michaels and thought hey, why not see if they fit in a spoon? They did with a little creative cutting. Interesting note: the bits of sparkly gems dissolved as the resin hardened. The color is still there, but the gems are completely gone.

Ok, getting rejected from a show sucks. There can be a wide variety of reasons for getting rejected, but in the end, they don’t want Gorilla Dust stuff in their show, they want somebody else’s stuff. Period.

I get rejected from about half of the shows I apply to. It never gets any less depressing to get one of those standard “we love your stuff, we think you are neat, BUT . . . “ emails. It’s easy to say that it’s not personal, but it kind of feels personal since it is your stuff they are actually rejecting.

My favorite was one that went along the lines of this wording:

Thank you for your overwhelming response to our show. This year we had over 83 applicants and ONLY 80 spaces available.

So basically just me and two other rejects not allowed in? Awesome. That kind of specific information could easily be left out. Gahhhhhhhhh.

When I see a show close by that I know I could make some money at, then get rejected, well there’s not only the sting of not being wanted, but also the sting of hey, I could have made some money. That stings worse than a bee filled with acidic bee death venom. . . or so I would imagine.

A few months ago, someone found my website (however these things happen – google, a business card of mine, divine intervention) and went to my contact form, filled it out, and asked me to apply to their show and included all sorts of details. And I thought hey, why not, it looks like a really fun, indie show and close to where I live. Then? Two days later they rejected me!

Ok so I’m not even going to lie, I am taking that one rather personally. I mean I never had even heard of the show or would have applied had this person not contacted me . . . maybe they just really needed my $10 non-refundable application fee.

So now I am out ten bucks and let me tell you, ten bucks can go a loooooooong way at the Taco Bell drive thru. I’m just saying.

In the end, craft show juries, organizers, owners, etc. have their reasons, have their own personal styles, opinions and favorite things, vision of how they want their show to look, etc. And that’s ok. They are organized enough to have their own shows and rock on because seriously? I will NEVER be that organized or motivated to produce a show.

So yeah, I am never going to be cool enough to get into all the shows I want to, but what I can do is enjoy the ones that allow me to participate, meet some fun people, sell some stuff, and have enough money left over at the end of the day for a burrito. What more do you really need in life?

Anyhow, sorry if you thought this entry would provide some insight into how to actually get into shows. I clearly have no idea. Here are my tips (get ready):

Apply early. I don't know if this helps, but just do it.
Take good pictures - this is key I think, all juries have to go on are your pictures. Don't use the same pictures every single year. It gets old fast.
Make good contacts at the shows you get into. Other crafters are a wealth of information about shows.
Do not write hate mail to the show organizers about how awesome you are and how buttheaded they are and how you hope they develop a very itchy rash on the back of their knees for not letting you into their show. Feel free to think it, but don't put in writing.
Go to the show you were rejected from if it's nearby. See what type of crafts were accepted, see if it's something you want to apply for again the next year.
Go to Taco Bell as needed.
Keep swimming.
Alcohol lessens the sting of rejection. Beer: the answer to and the cause of all of life's problems.
If all else fails, start your own show . . . and hey, let me be a vendor. I'll bring snacks!

**Unrelated, but I thought I would try and write some reviews of craft/art shows I have done. I know that whenever I am thinking about applying to a show I always try to find info online from past vendors . . . and usually come up with nothing. Especially when a show booth can cost $300 and up, I need some reassurance that someone, somewhere has some experience they can share, good or bad. So that’s my plan, write some reviews. Nothing fancy, just my personal experience as a vendor, thoughts on location, crowd size, advertising, organization, etc. Look forward to that feature in the near to distant future here on this blog**

I loooooove this necklace - I had to cut out my face as I had been awake for something like a million hours when I took this shot. Anyhow, this one is going up in the shop soon and will be available for $35. Hope you love it as much as I do! And I promise to take some high quality pictures of this piece for the shop, not just a headless me photographed with a grainy camera phone. I have been experimenting with these little bezels from Spicycoco. They are really cute and because of the small lip around the edge, it makes it easy to keep the resin from overflowing.

Off to the thrift store today to see what new and exciting shaped spoons I can find.
